Did somebody say, “Let’s have a Ben-B-Que”?

“That is what makes it fun. We love giving back to the community and we love when people give back to the community. With them giving back we can reward them for all of their work. It’s a fun little thing.” — Ben.

From Teresa Varley, Steelers.com:

What do you get when you mix football players, backyard games, and some great food right off the grill?

You get a ‘Ben-B-Que.’

No, Ben Roethlisberger wasn’t behind the grill flipping burgers and cooking out for anyone on Saturday, but he did host a special group of individuals for a ‘Ben-B-Q’ following practice at Saint Vincent College and it was nothing but fun for everyone.

The guests were chosen because of their community involvement, all part of the NFL’s goal to have 100 Million Minutes of volunteerism and community activism this year as the league celebrates its 100th season.

The Steelers chose individuals who give back to the community to honor at the event, including fans and local community leaders who give straight from the heart. Among those attending were Pittsburgh Police Chief Scott Schubert, along with Officer Anthony Burke, who was one of the first responders at the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting, and Officer Zach Beatty. Also part of the group was Pennsylvania Special Olympian Danielle List.

“This is great,” said List as she was playing corn hole with Pouncey. “It’s a lot of fun just hanging out with the Steelers. It’s cool to meet them.”

Winners were also selected who shared their community involvement as a part of the #SteelersHuddlefor100, including Rhyan Breen, who helped a rehab project for the Knights of Columbus, and Kimberly Sabatano, who volunteered for a charity golf outing.

“It’s such a cool thing for these people to do it and for us to recognize them,” said Roethlisberger. “We always get recognized for things we do, but they don’t and it’s great we are able to do this.”

The fun-filled event included first and foremost, food. But the guests also had the chance to compete against Roethlisberger and teammates Maurkice Pouncey, Ramon Foster and Alejandro Villanueva in games like corn hole.

“Having Chief Schubert here, that is my guy,” said Pouncey. “He is […]

Varley: Ben’s motivation is simple

From Teresa Varley’s training camp report at Steelers.com:

Ben Roethlisberger has one goal. It’s simple. It motivates him. It drives him.

And he hopes every one of his teammates shares his feeling. He wants to win the Super Bowl. And not just one.

“That is much more motivation for me than what people say,” said Roethlisberger after the team’s morning walk-through on Friday at Saint Vincent College. “I told the guys I’ll be selfish when it comes to that. I want to win Super Bowls. That should be all of their motivation. That is what is driving me right now.”

When it comes to how to go about getting there, Roethlisberger isn’t selfish though. Personal stats, that doesn’t matter to him. What matters are wins and losses, because that is what is going to get the team to where they want to be, hoisting the Lombardi Trophy when the season ends.

“I will do whatever it takes to win,” said Roethlisberger. “I would rather throw for five yards and win than 500 and lose. I’ll just take a win. Whatever we need to win football games and make the playoffs and try to win a Super Bowl is what I am here for.”

The road to the Super Bowl starts during camp. It starts with how players approach every day, every aspect of camp. It starts with how they can improve from last year. And on the offensive side of the ball, it starts with Roethlisberger.

“I have to play better,” he said. “I always start with myself. It starts with me because I have the ball in my hands. I need to make sure I distribute the ball to guys. Make sure I don’t turn the ball over. I know guys are excited about what they bring to the table. I am excited for guys. From tight ends, to running backs to receivers. The line is pretty special. It’s kind of to be determined yet. That is the fun part. There is […]

Ben: ‘Ready to go’

From Teresa Varley’s One-on-One with #7 today:

Ben Roethlisberger isn’t new to this.

Entering his 16th season, reporting for training camp is routine for him. And each year he brings less with him, knowing he is just here for football.

While three weeks in a dorm room might not excite him, the start of football is a whole other story.

“You know that football is literally right around the corner. Real football,” said Roethlisberger. “As much as you hate being away from your kids and your family and coming here, it’s fun to be around the guys and the fun and laughs and everything camp entails.”

Roethlisberger is looking for the offense to improve when the team hits the field for the first practice of training camp on Friday, and it’s going to take every player on the roster for that to happen.

“We have to go out and do our part individually,” said Roethlisberger. “If we all do our part individually it will make us better as a team.

“Right now, nobody has won a game or lost a game. Last season, records and teams, you can throw it out the window because everything is new this year. We will just give it everything we have and see what happens.”

Roethlisberger, who signed a two-year contract extension this offseason that will keep him in the black and gold through the 2021 season, was happy to hear that Coach Mike Tomlin also signed a contract extension, keeping him in Pittsburgh through the 2021 season.

“It’s great. He is our leader,” said Roethlisberger. “He has been the coach for a long time with this organization. It shows the stability that is the Steelers organization and gives us another year to play hard for him.”

Scott not only posed for a photo with Ben this weekend, but sent us some great action photos of #7 hard at work!

“People can debate who the best QB in the NFL is all they want. For me, the only QB I want leading my team is Big Ben. It was great seeing him today! Both in his tireless dedication to his craft and in the generous way he treats the team’s supporters, Ben sets an example befitting of his leadership role on the team. It is always a pleasure for us to see Ben and interact with him in person. My family and I are proud that he is the QB of the team we love!” — Scott Juba.

“I have been a fan since he was drafted in 2004, but I’ve come to respect him more for his faith in Christ than in his work on the football field in the last two years. Last year before the season began, I heard a talk that was […]
