Mr. Colbert on Ben’s progress

From his interview with Steelers Nation Unite:

In a world that right now might seem disconnected because of working from home and social distancing, Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert spent Tuesday afternoon connecting fans with the team during a key time in the offseason.

With the 2020 NFL Draft less than a month away, Colbert, Coach Mike Tomlin and all of the scouts and coaches are dealing with the same issues all of us are – working remotely and trying to accomplish things without everything at our fingertips.

Colbert took time out from their virtual meetings to talk to fans on the Steelers Nation Unite Huddle, as well as taking media questions in a conference call later, answering questions about Ben Roethlisberger, the draft, how the team is dealing with COVID-19, new additions like Derek Watt and Stefen Wisniewski, and much more.

On Ben Roethlisberger’s progress:

“So far so good. All the indications from Ben himself, in communication with our doctors, our trainers, the video we have seen of him throwing earlier in the spring, are all encouraging. We haven’t seen him throw live because he hasn’t been in our building. He has only been there for rehab checks with our doctors and trainers. He can’t really physically get out on the field in this situation. This would be the time of year the players would be allowed to circle back in and begin their offseason programs. All of that is on hold. At this moment we just have to rely on what our doctors, trainers and Ben himself are giving us and that is encouraging.”

A message from Ben

During this difficult time, it’s great to see companies stepping up and providing free services to help ease peoples’ burdens, especially for clinicians and patients in hospitals. NeoLight, a company that my wife and I support, provides products for babies with jaundice and we are also willing to help. Jaundice is the number one reason babies are readmitted to hospitals. And especially right now, we need to do all we can to keep new born babies (and subsequently their mothers) from getting readmitted to the hospital.

NeoLight will provide phototherapy lights on loan free of charge to hospitals and clinics so that they can help parents treat their babies safely at home. For more information or to arrange a loaner unit contact them via email at hello@theneolight.com. — Ben.

‘Ben Roethlisberger has no doubts he’ll play well upon return’

“I’ll gradually ramp up the number of days and the throws and the distance and the velocity. I really feel like I could let it rip right now if I had to, but what’s the point? There’s no need for me to rush it.”

From Ron Cook’s interview with #7:

I spent a lot of time this winter wondering what it’s like being Ben Roethlisberger these days.

“There’s pressure, but I put more pressure on myself,” he said Thursday. “As much as the fans and my teammates want me out there, I want to be out there even more. I saw last season what this team is capable of doing. I’m pushing myself to come back better than ever.”

“I have no doubts I’m going to be able to come back and play well — none,” Roethlisberger said. “I have complete confidence in that. I’m throwing without pain for the first time in years. Some games, I would have a little pain. Some games, I would have a lot of pain. But in the New England game and the Seattle game [last season], it got to be too much. To be able to throw without pain now? That feels nice. That’s a nice feeling. I know I’m not getting any younger, but I feel younger because I don’t have any pain.”

Roethlisberger said he will increase his throwing from twice a week to three times a week next week.

“Right now, it’s about 40 throws a day and about 20 yards. I throw from my knees and I throw flat-footed. It’s mainly just about getting my spin back.

“I’ll gradually ramp up the number of days and the throws and the distance and the velocity. I really feel like I could let it rip right now if I had to, but what’s the point? There’s no need for me to rush it. Our goal was for me to be 80, 90, 100% by OTAs and minicamp. Now that it looks like those things are going to be canceled [because of the COVID-19 pandemic], I can take my time a little more.”

Roethlisberger said he threw to teammate Ryan Switzer on Thursday. It gave him a nice lift at a time he’s home-bound like the rest of us.

“He’s in my small Bible study group and he called and […]
