93.7 The Fan: The Ben Roethlisberger Show
Ben joined The Cook and Poni Show for his weekly radio spot today. Below is a recap in case you missed it:
The Steelers are licking their wounds after a 31-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns this past Sunday. It was only the second time Roethlisberger has lost to the Browns in his career.
“It was frustrating. I felt like I could and should have played better and do more to give our team a chance to win,” Roethlisberger said. “I take it upon myself and it was a long bus ride home. You got to let it fester inside you a little bit because I think that’s what motivates you, but you also have to find a way to move on and that is why today we have moved on and were getting ready for this week.”
Roethlisberger said it wasn’t as bad as it may have looked when they watched the game back yesterday.
“It really came down to not making plays when we had to make plays. They made them and we didn’t,” Roethlisberger said. “We didn’t make a lot of mistakes, we just didn’t make the plays that were there to be made.”
He said that was the most frustrating part is knowing what to do in making those plays, but just not being able to execute.
Roethlisberger said the game plan was to run the ball against the Browns, and he thought they were having success with it, but it came down to not being able to score inside the red zone. He says they have to start scoring touchdowns instead of settling for field goals.
“We ran the ball and I know that should make the fans happy, because them and the media were asking for us to run it,” Roethlisberger added. “But we still have to find a way to get it in the end zone.”
The offensive troubles have prompted some to call for the firing of offensive coordinator Todd Haley.
Roethlisberger told the guys that all coaches are going to feel the heat when things are not going right, and it’s part of the job. He says they have to just let all of the negative comments roll right off their backs, and the simple way to resolve it is to starting playing better and win some games.
“We as players need to play better,” Roethlisberger said. “It’s our […]
Browns 31, Steelers 10
“We came in with the right attitude and mindset. I didn’t play well enough. It’s very frustrating. We’re all frustrated but we’ll stay together…I hold myself to a higher standard and I’ve got to be better.” — Ben.

Make it a Black & Ghoul…er…Black & Gold Halloween!
And share it with us!!
If you have a Big Ben (or one of his teammates like Troy or DaBeard) going out for Halloween, or attending a costume party this year, and you’d like to send us their photo, we’d love to post it in Ben’s Steelers Halloween Album.

Grants announced for two police departments
Today, Ben announced the fourth and fifth grant of the 2014-15 season from The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation at The Giving Back Fund.
The Foundation will be distributing grants to the Cleveland Metroparks Ranger Department and the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority Police Department within proximity of where the Steelers will play the Browns on Sunday, October 12th.
“This grant will significantly contribute to our efforts to provide good law enforcement services to our residents, partners and stakeholders throughout Cuyahoga County.” — Jeffery K. Patterson, CMHA CEO and Safety Director.
The Cleveland Metroparks Rangers plan to use their grant toward safety equipment for their K-9 unit, while the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) will apply the grant funds to the purchase and training of a new dog.
Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority’s Chief of Police Andrés González said, “We are thrilled to receive this grant. It will enhance our operations and improve our delivery of services.”
This marks the eighth season that the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation has distributed grants to K-9 units. The mission of the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation is to support K-9 units of police and fire departments throughout the United States with a particular emphasis on support for service dogs in Pittsburgh, PA. Roethlisberger and the Foundation also strive to support Make-A-Wish.
The Foundation distributed $157,600 in grants to K-9 units around the country during the 2013 NFL season and has distributed in excess of $1.2 million since 2007.
In commenting on why the mission of the foundation is so important to him, Roethlisberger said, “We’re very fortunate to be in the position that we are able to help these K-9 units. The work that is performed by the dogs and their handlers as well as the bond that is formed is incredible. We’re just thrilled to do our small part.”
This season, fans of The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation can support future K-9 grants by purchasing candy on Sarris Candies’ website, (www.SarrisCandiesFundraising.com), using a special purchase code (77-7777). Sarris will donate 25 percent of the purchase price to The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation.

Big Ben talks Browns
From Steelers.com today:
Re: Being disappointed about his play after the game:
Yeah I was. There were three, four or five plays I’d like to have back but you could probably say that about any game. Some of them are going to be plays that you guys don’t even know about. Obviously the fumble but just a couple things here and there that I’d like to have back.
Do you feel at home at Cleveland?
Well it’s a very hostile environment and I anticipate, and I’m sure a lot of guys around here or people that have been here for a while, this is as big of a game probably in Cleveland in a while. Just because of their record, our record, us coming in there, AFC North (and) the rivalry that’s there. I anticipate it being a hostile environment, maybe like nothing I’ve ever seen up there before.
Do you get up more to play the Browns?
Heck yeah. Well I’m a competitor. It’s a division rival. It’s my home state. Yeah I always get up a little bit more.
Re: Red zone scoring issues and if they need to run the ball more frequently in that area of the field:
No, we need to just execute. We were 1-of-4 last week. I think the week before we were a lot better. We’re going to take what the defense gives us. Last week it was throwing the ball. We just need to execute better.
Is the pass heavy play-calling in the red zone a by-product of operating out of the no-huddle?
Some of it is but that’s me calling plays (and) feeling like we had the advantage in the pass game down there. So I called passes and I don’t regret any of it.
Re: Having lots of big plays in the first half against Cleveland and if that was a mind-set approach or what the Browns did:
A little bit of both. You never really expect a screen, I think we had two screens early, to go real big. You expect to get first downs and things like that. But for them to go as big as they did I think it’s just a by-product of what they gave us.
Does it feel like more of a rivalry based on how things are going this year?
I don’t know […]
It’s a Warrior Wednesday!
