Ben: ‘Mike McCarthy has heart for this team’

From Teresa Varley, Steelers.com:

Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was a guest on SNR’s ‘In the Locker Room‘ with Rob King and Max Starks on Wednesday, talking about new head coach Mike McCarthy.

“I think it’s a great hire,” said Roethlisberger. “I think it’s smart for a few reasons. There’s something to be said about a Pittsburgh guy. I know that that’s not going to win games necessarily, but he understands what it is to bleed black and gold. I know he’s coached elsewhere, but you’re telling me that deep down inside him, he didn’t always have black and gold run through his veins a little bit. There’s something there.

“Is it going to win games? Probably not. But I used the analogy on my podcast that Miami of Ohio, right, my alma mater, I wanted them to hire a Miami guy, because you know he’s not using the stepping stone, you know he loves it, he wants to be there forever.

“Mike McCarthy, you could tell in his introductory press conference, this is a big deal for him. I know people will say, well, it’s a head coaching job, it’s a big deal for anybody. There’s just something there to it. You get a guy with a lot of heart, and I’ve used this analogy a million times. I’ll pick a lineman with less talent and more heart than more talent and less heart. And people go, well, why? Because there’s something that you can’t quantify. You can’t gauge heart.

“And Mike McCarthy has heart for this team, this city, this organization, Lombardi’s, and there’s something about that. I’m just telling you.”

McCarthy brings an offensive minded approach to the Steelers, after several defensive oriented head coaches, and that is something that excites Roethlisberger as well.

“I understand this team, and this city will always bleed defense and running the ball,” said Roethlisberger. “But at some point, you’ve got to keep up with the Joneses, and you got start scoring some points. And it doesn’t mean that you’re taking anything away from your defense. So that’s another reason I like this hire.

“And I would use this analogy and ask people this question. If you were going into a game or a season, say it’s a Super Bowl or it’s a full season, you had a […]

Throwback Thursday: January 22, 2022

This seemed like the perfect Throwback Thursday post today with the forecast of snow & ice for much of the East Coast this weekend:

“If Ben ever sees this, we did try our best to be there!” — Taylor & Bailey, January 3, 2022.

Taylor and Bailey, Ben DID see it! But let’s give everyone a little background first –

Taylor and Bailey left Oak Island, NC at 7:30am for Heinz Field to see Big Ben & the Steelers play the Browns that evening…but Mother Nature had other plans. They got as far as I-95 in Northern Virginia when ice and snow on the interstate stopped them in their tracks – literally.

From Nicole Ford, WPXI-TV:

From snowflakes to stranded — for 16 hours on Monday, Taylor Mooney and Bailey Ferguson sat just 26 miles north of Richmond on I-95.

“Terrible just terrible. There was three inches of just solid ice covering the entire road. So anytime we attempted to get out of the vehicle you were just sliding everywhere,” Ferguson said.

The destination for the two was Pittsburgh just in time for the Steelers’ kickoff. This duo left Oak Island, North Carolina, by car after two canceled flights determined to be in their seats for Big Ben’s last home game. It was around 1 p.m. when the trip came to a halt.

“We tried everything. We said okay maybe we will make it after the first quarter, maybe we will make it for halftime, maybe we will make it for the last two minutes of the game that’s what kept us going for so many hours. Just maybe we will get to pull into the parking lot of people celebrating in the parking lot as they are leaving,” Ferguson said.

It wasn’t until about 5 a.m. Tuesday that things got moving and that they finally got off the interstate.

From Taylor’s Facebook page on January 4th:

Well I’m sure MANY of you have seen the news about all the horrendous incidents from I-95 over the past 2 days. Well, me and Bailey had the pleasure of getting stuck alongside many others in Virginia. We left Oak Island at 7:30 yesterday morning to head to Pittsburgh for the game last night, due to our flight getting cancelled twice, thankfully we stopped at 11:30 for food and to fill […]
