It all started with a video message from Big Ben and Christian musician, Micah Tyler on September 24th:

I am so honored to team up with ‘Big Ben’ Roethlisberger to tackle a great cause!

When Ben wore my ‘Different’ shirt to training camp a few weeks ago and it caused so much attention, we knew we should take the opportunity to shine a light on something way bigger than a T-shirt. Honored to partner with Light of Life Rescue Mission, who has been on the ground making a huge difference in the lives of homeless citizens in Pittsburgh for a years.

For every shirt we sell, two meals are being donated to Light of Life Rescue Mission! — Micah Tyler.

Week 13: Steelers 28, Vikings 36

“The greatest compliment I can give a quarterback is I’ll turn the television on when I know you’re playing. That’s Ben Roethlisberger.” — Terry Bradshaw, after the game.

Ben’s post-game interview – and yes, I know that’s not Ben in the image shown, but trust me on this…

The positives from this game, from Bob Labriola’s “What went right, wrong at Vikings” recap:

10:43 p.m. – What Went Right: The Steelers got on the scoreboard when a 3-yard pass from Ben Roethlisberger to Najee Harris capped a 10-play, 75 yard drive. Harris rushed for 19 yards on three carries in addition to the touchdown catch, and James Washington made a combat catch for 29 yards over Kris Boyd, who later drew a taunting penalty that gifted the Steelers another 15 yards.

10:55 p.m. – What Went Right: The Steelers scored a second touchdown on a seven-play, 42-yard drive capped by another Najee Harris touchdown, this one a 1-yard run that made it 29-14 with 14:49 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Steelers got the ball back quickly after their first touchdown when Ahkello Witherspoon intercepted a Kirk Cousins pass on the first play after the Vikings received the kickoff following Harris’ first touchdown. Chase Claypool make an important combat catch for 11 yards to convert a third-and-4, and the Steelers also were helped by a pass interference penalty on Cameron Dantzler that put the ball at the 1-yard line.

11:06 p.m. – What Went Right: The Steelers scored a third touchdown in a five-minute span on a 30-yard pass from Ben Roethlisberger to James Washington with 12:11 left in the fourth quarter that made it 29-20 following a failed 2-point conversion attempt. The defense set things up with a three-and-out sealed when Minkah Fitzpatrick broke up a third-down pass for Justin Jefferson. The third touchdown capped a three-play, 69-yard drive, with the big play being a 37-yard hookup with Diontae Johnson.

11:24 p.m. – What Went Right: Ahkello Witherspoon’s second interception of the game and his 41-yard return gave the Steelers the ball at the Vikings 21-yard line. After a 6-yard completion to Ray-Ray McCloud, Ben Roethlisberger found Pat Freiermuth for the touchdown. Then a 2-point conversion pass to Diontae Johnson brought the Steelers to 36-28 with 4:14 left in […]

And the nominee is…..

From Teresa Varley, Steelers.com:

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is the Steelers nominee for the eighth annual Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, presented annually to a player for their on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition.

The award was created in 2014 to honor Art Rooney Sr., the founder of the Steelers and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“Art Rooney is an iconic figure in NFL history,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell at the time the award was introduced. “It is appropriate that we honor his legacy in this way and recognize NFL players for one of the important values that Mr. Rooney represented so well.”

Roethilsberger, who has been an offensive team captain 13 times, is nominated for the first time in his career. Roethlisberger is in his 18th season, giving his heart and soul to the game he loves.

One player from every team was nominated for the award, and eight finalists, four in each conference, will be selected by members of the NFL Legends Community, including Warrick Dunn, Curtis Martin, Larry Fitzgerald and Leonard Wheeler.

Current players will have the final say when the eight appear on their Pro Bowl ballot under NFL Sportsmanship Award. The winner is announced during the NFL Honors show the night before the Super Bowl.

The winner was named after Rooney because of the class he brought to the NFL and his approach that always had sportsmanship at the forefront.

“It is gratifying that sportsmanship is the category,” said Steelers President Art Rooney II when the award was first introduced in 2014. “It’s appropriate. I like to think of my grandfather as someone who truly was a good sport, somebody who cared about the respect and the integrity of the game. The fact it’s being voted on by the players, well, the recipient can feel good about it because it’s voted on by his peers.”

Wednes…er…Tuesday’s Q&A with the media

One day early because of Thursday night’s game….

“He should be recognized more than just…I mean, I don’t know who else is ‘Defensive Player Of The Year’ other than that guy. I’m sure there are other candidates, I just don’t know. But he should absolutely get MVP votes as well because that’s what kind of player he is.” — Ben on TJ Watt.

More from Teresa Varley, Steelers.com:

With just fives games left to play in the season, and the AFC North and the AFC overall so tightly contested, every game for the Steelers now is almost like a playoff game.

“We keep saying when I talk to you all every week, it’s a must win. When you get to the playoffs, it’s a must win. Because of the hole or whatever you want to say that we’ve kind of dug ourselves into, even though we’re not really in the hole because of the way the AFC is, we’re still behind some teams and have to do some work.”

The Steelers are currently third in the AFC North at 6-5-1, but there isn’t much that separates them from the Baltimore Ravens, who lead the North at 8-4, the Cincinnati Bengals who are second at 7-5, or the Cleveland Browns who are in last place at 6-6.

“We can’t let up. Every game is a must win. Every game is a playoff type caliber game. That’s the approach we have to take moving forward the rest of the way.”

The Steelers don’t have much time to prepare this week, playing on Thursday night against the Minnesota Vikings on the road. The key will be familiarity, not trying to put a lot of new stuff in but trusting what has worked for them.

“We’ll have to rely more on stuff we know. If you look at what we’ve installed, it’s not like we don’t have a bunch of new stuff. Stuff added last week, two weeks ago, things that we’ve done so guys can try and play faster.”

The Steelers and Vikings have both found themselves in some tightly contested games this season, and while it hasn’t been ideal, Roethlisberger said it could be a lesson for guys as the seasons tightens even more.

“Obviously we’d love to have the blowout game and not have to worry about it, but I definitely think you can learn something […]

Victory Monday: Notable Quotes

“He’s calling what he sees. He’s able to adjust whenever he wants. We’re comfortable, too, as well. Not taking anything from the OC but we’re just playing. We’re doing whatever he tells us and the offense just rallies around him.” — Diontae Johnson on Big Ben (via Mark Kaboly/The Athletic).

Pittsburgh Steelers @steelers
.@_BigBen7 led us on a game-winning drive for the 51st time in his career, which is tied with Tom Brady for third-most in NFL history.

“I’ve been in a lot of those circumstances like that with him. He usually does what he did last night. He relishes those opportunities. You want to educate young players, too…it was a point to be made to the young player – what’s desired and expected. Young players can learn a lot from Ben and Cam.” — Coach Tomlin on giving the game ball to Ben (during his press conference today).
