“Big Ben set to golf in sport’s birthplace”

“It’s going to be awesome. Three days in Ireland and a week in Scotland … 12 rounds in 10 days. So we have a lot of golf to play at some of the best courses in the world.” — Ben, from the interview below.

From an interview with Mike Bires, Beaver County Times:

Ben Roethlisberger’s passion for golf will soon take him to places where the sport originated.

In late June, the Steelers’ star quarterback will take a golf vacation in Ireland and Scotland. Roethlisberger, a 3-handicap, will make the trip with three friends.

“I’ve played a lot of great golf courses (in the United States), but I’ve never played in Ireland or Scotland before,” Roethlisberger said. “That’s the Mecca of golf. So I’m really looking forward to it.”

Roethlisberger said his golf trip to Ireland will begin with breakfast with Dan Rooney, the Steelers’ chairman emeritus who’s in his last year as the U.S. Ambassador to Ireland. “Our first stop is breakfast at Mr. Rooney’s house (in Dublin),” Roethlisberger said. “Then we’re off to play some of the very best courses in Ireland and Scotland. I can’t wait to get there.”

Time is running out…

…to sign your youngster up for the 2012 Ben Roethlisberger Football Camp!

“Ben was obviously having a great time with the kids. He was running around cheering them on and jumping into games. The amazing thing was that he threw a pass to every single kid at the camp – nearly 500 passes. I was thinking that if he throws an average of 30 passes in each regular season game, that would be about 480 passes for the season. He threw more than that in a half hour at the camp. Our kids caught both of their passes from Ben and by the end of the two days they were tired, but very happy we came.” – Bill Dupray, Fairfax, VA

2012 Hoge Starks Ward Celebrity Golf Classic for Children

Just want to say thanks to Hoge, Starks and Ward for another great golf tourney. The Caring Place is a great place and this event really helps, thanks guys! — Ben

Golfing for a good cause today –

Since 1994, the Hoge Starks Ward Celebrity Golf Classic for Children has raised $2 million including matching funds from Highmark Blue Shield for the Highmark Caring Foundation.

Merril Hoge, Hines Ward, and Max Starks invited Steelers coaches and players and other celebrities from the area and across the country to play a round of golf at the Southpointe Golf Club to raise awareness of and funds for The Caring Place.

The Caring Place champions the cause of grieving children by creating awareness of their needs, providing programs for them and their families, and empowering the community to effectively support them.

Ben took a few moments before heading out onto the golf course to answer questions from the media about the tournament, the Caring Place, OTA’s, wide receiver Mike Wallace, and how he feels about receiving his recent college degree, “I feel so smart right now,” he said with a laugh.

As to learning the offensive system, “It’s just something new. It’s change, it’s different – doesn’t mean it’s good or bad. We’re just learning something new,” Ben said. “I’m not saying I don’t like the playbook or anything like that. Some of the stuff, the concepts, are awesome. It’s just getting an understanding of something new.”

The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation announces guidelines for the 2012-13 NFL season grants

The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation at The Giving Back Fund has announced the new grant guidelines for the 2012-13 season.

This marks the sixth grant cycle for the Foundation. The majority of the grants distributed will help K-9 units to purchase dogs and dog safety vests, but other types of needs are also considered. The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation will disperse grants to police and fire departments’ K9 units throughout the U.S.

The Foundation will be distributing grants in the cities and surrounding communities of each regular season away game for the Steelers during the 2012-13 season. The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation invites police and fire departments in these cities to submit proposals detailing their needs.

The 2012 cycle will also award grants to two cities anywhere in the U.S. that would not otherwise be eligible (must be a non-NFL market city) if the Steelers go to the playoffs. In addition, the Foundation will continue to make grants to several police and fire department K-9 units in the Pittsburgh area following Super Bowl XLVII.

The Foundation is pleased to announce that the first grant of the 2012 season will go to the Findlay Police Department in Ohio. The funds will be used to purchase a new canine and train both the dog and handler.

Findlay Police Chief Greg Horne said, “This is the second time the Foundation has been gracious enough to give us a dog. Our current dog is now in need of retirement and we couldn’t be happier that The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation has stepped in again. We recognize that the Foundation does not often give to the same department multiple times, so we feel very fortunate.”

The first K-9 grant made by The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation was to the Findlay Police Department in 2006 to replace a canine that was tragically shot and killed in the line of duty. The Foundation is pleased to provide continued support to the law enforcement agency of Roethlisberger’s hometown.

The Foundation distributed more than $120,000 in grants to K-9 units around the country during the 2011 NFL season and has distributed in excess of $850,000 since 2006.

Eligible departments must apply to The Giving Back Fund by August 1, 2012. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
