“The mindset is exactly what it’s been the last couple of weeks: let’s get one win. It’s desperation, but it’s still staying focused and giving it everything we’ve got. There’s no reason to quit. We’re going to play until the final whistle no matter what.” — Ben, on the team’s focus this weekend.
“I watch quarterbacks all the time, and I was one of the people that said last year, ‘Listen let’s not jump on the rookie bandwagons too early because it’s only one year, and the media hypes it up.’ I took some flak for that. Then this year, people are coming up to me saying, ‘Boy you sure were right about some of these quarterbacks.’ But I thought that Russell Wilson…there is something about him – the way he plays the game – he’s not just an athlete running around. He’s a good pocket passer, he can make plays with his legs, and is obviously a very smart player. From what I hear he is a great teammate and leader. I’m really impressed with the way he plays the game and I’m a fan. I root for him!” — When asked whether he watches the play of the young quarterbacks, and Russell Wilson in particular.

Roethlisberger weighs in on head coach Mike Tomlin’s sideline wandering in Baltimore, saying, “I don’t think it was intentional. I was watching the JumboTron too because that gives you better views. There are certain times during the game I would rather watch that because usually it’s an end-zone view and you can see things better. I know what he’s talking about when he says he gets caught up watching that.”
On Sunday, the Steelers will face the Miami Dolphins and former Steeler receiver Mike Wallace.
“I have talked to Mike,” Ben says of his former teammate. “He gets frustrated because he wants to make plays and he wants to help his team. Mike was a great teammate. I know that some of the fans and the perception was out there, and everyone’s entitled to their opinion. As a friend, he was a great guy. We miss him, not just as a playmaker, but also as a teammate and a friend.”

Yes, the near-comeback in the fourth quarter from 19-7 and 22-14 deficits was impressive. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger led two long touchdown drives, completing 13 of 19 passes for 241 yards.
On the 2-point conversion, the Steelers called the same play that went for the Cotchery touchdown. This time, Roethlisberger threw it to Sanders in the left corner of the end zone even though Cotchery and wide receiver Antonio Brown — the best receiver in the NFL this season — later told him they had single coverage on the right side.
“It has to be a quick throw,” Roethlisberger said. “I don’t have time to read it from right to left. I have all the faith in the world in Emmanuel. He was lined up against a corner [Chykie Brown], who had just came into the game.”
Later, Roethlisberger huddled with Sanders in a corner of the Steelers locker room.
“I just told him to keep his head up,” Roethlisberger said. “He’s made too many big plays for this team to get down on himself.”
The final drive was especially impressive because so many of the Steelers’ offensive players were injured. Linemen Fernando Velasco, Kelvin Beachum and Mike Adams were out. So was running back Le’Veon Bell, who left with a concussion on the last drive after taking a brutal hit from the Ravens’ Jimmy Smith and Courtney Upshaw. Guy Whimper had to play left tackle and Cody Wallace filled in at center.
“Those guys battled their tails off,” Roethlisberger said. “I would have loved to get it to overtime to see how they would have done.”

The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation: Grant to the Hagerstown Fire Department
Today, Ben announced that his Foundation, in association with The Giving Back Fund, will be distributing a grant to the Hagerstown Fire Department near Baltimore, where the Steelers play the Ravens on Thanksgiving night.
The Hagerstown Fire Department will use the grant to purchase a trained explosives detection K-9 and training for the new dog’s handler.
Hagerstown Fire Department Chief Kyd Dieterich said, “We are so grateful the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation recognizes this need in our community, and we’re even more excited to have an explosives detection K-9 dedicated to the fire department. This will significantly improve response times for those calls where there’s a greater potential for damage to people and property. With this grant, the Hagerstown Fire Department will be able to provide greater services to our citizens without any cost to the taxpayers.”
In commenting on why the mission of the foundation is so important to him, Ben said, “We’re very fortunate to be in the position that we are able to help these K-9 units. The work that is performed by the dogs and their handlers as well as the bond that is formed is incredible. We’re just thrilled to do our small part.”

Pearl: A gem of a fan
A special Shout Out to Pearl Sirota, one of Big Ben’s biggest fans! Pearl will turn 88-years young on Thanksgiving Day this year.
Pearl’s proud daughter, Linda Lacinski, wanted to do something special for her mom this year, and said being on Ben’s website during the week of her birthday would be the icing on the cake!
“Pearl was born and raised in New Ken (Kensington) and moved to the Dallas, Texas area to be close to me and my sister in 2004”, says Linda. “She has remained a die-hard Steelers fan, even in the heart of ‘Cowboys country’! Each Sunday, she dons her Roethlisberger jersey and watches the game at home if it’s broadcast locally. Otherwise, Pearl and I often visit a nearby sports bar to watch the game.”
But Linda tells us that her mother is very protective about her Big Ben, and worries about him on every play!
“Pearl cringes when Big Ben is sacked. She’ll say, ‘He needs better protection or he’s going to get hurt’. Everyone around us laughs!
“Last Halloween, Pearl dressed up as her favorite Steeler for a party at her retirement home (photos above). While it may be an oxymoron, she was the sweetest looking football player ever.”
And Pearl is as tough as her quarterback –
“She fell in August and had to have back surgery recently; we moved her from an independent living apartment to an assisted living apartment. She is still getting adjusted after 2 weeks in the hospital and 4 weeks at an in-patient physical rehab center. But she is determined to get back to her old self.
As for her birthday celebration?
“You can bet we will have dinner, birthday cake and dishes completed in time for kickoff on Thanksgiving. We’re looking forward to Big Ben, Troy, and the rest of the Steelers taking down the Ravens AGAIN!!! Happy Birthday MOM!!!”
