Wednesday’s Q&A with the media

“I think everyone is looking at it as way more than it is. The older guys have met three or four time now – throughout OTA’s, we did it during mini camps, and we did it during training camp, and we said we wanted to meet periordically just to talk about the the state of the team, and where we were and things we need to do as leaders and older guys on this team. I think now is a just good time for us to get together and talk. It’s not a panic-type thing, it’s just a good time for us to get together and talk.” — Ben, on their upcoming player-only meeting.

Ben is also asked about the 0-2 start, Heath “the best tight end in the game” Miller; the wide receivers; the Bears defense; receivers lobbying for more catches, “I’ve gotten a lot of nice gifts from guys”; the confusion right after the Paulson fumble; the no-huddle and two-minute modes; and working with his offensive coordinator.

The Ben Roethlisberger Show: Everyone Needs To Rediscover The Steeler Way

From Ben’s segment on 93.7 The Fan this morning during the Vinnie & Cook Show:

091613newsHours after a tough loss at Cincinnati, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger joins Vinnie & Cook for his weekly appearance on Sportsradio 93.7 The Fan.

Roethlisberger says the Steelers’ 0-2 start is “uncharted territory,” and reveals that he is calling a meeting with the other veteran players.

“We’re going to sit down and talk and figure out a way to right the ship and make sure that these young guys know that this is unacceptable,” he says. “And it starts with all of us older guys. Maybe us older guys need to revisit it ourselves, because we need to find a better way of letting these guys know what it means to be a Pittsburgh Steeler.”

“Maybe that means bringing in the Lombardi [trophies] and setting them in the team meeting room and putting up the Hall of Fame pictures and all that stuff.”

Ben also reveals the physical toll the loss to Cincinnati took on his body.

“You wake up in the morning and you start to feel all the little shots,” he says. “The neck’s hurting, the back’s hurting, the ankles are hurting, the bruises are starting to come through. It doesn’t feel like flag football this morning, I’ll tell you that.”

Ben offers his theories on the team’s offensive woes, gives kudos to new center Fernando Velasco, and explains why balance is the key when it comes to a sound offensive scheme.

Ben: “The quarterback needs to play better, and he will.”

The Steelers fell to the Bengals 20-10 last night.

“Not a lot of positives right now, and that’s a negative. If anything, it’s going to be how upset guys are, myself included, that this is happening to us. We need for older guys to step up, younger guys to get going so we can avoid the road we’re going down.” — Ben, when asked if there were any positive to take from last night’s game.

More from Ben, post-game:

postgame_091613What happened on the play where David Paulson lost the fumble?

“It’s hard because we don’t know if it’s a fumble. You see the crowd start going crazy and their sideline start reacting like they’re going to challenge it, so at that moment you start thinking, “OK, we’ve got to hurry up and call one of the hurry up plays.” So that’s what we were trying to do, and Coach Lewis threw flag.”

It seems like every time you get something going, there’s a penalty or something happens. Is that making the offense worse than you think it actually is?

“It’s frustrating. We had some big plays called back because of penalties, and just give them credit. They threw a lot of different looks at us and we didn’t — I didn’t— make enough plays to get it done tonight.”

How much of a momentum killer was the tripping call on Marcus [Gilbert]?

“Very. That’s a big play. I’m not sure where he got tackled, but I think it’s on the other side of the 50 and we’ve got all the momentum in the world going there and next thing you know, you’re backed up. I just — looking up at the JumboTron — I quickly got to see it.”

On the drive at the end of the first half, that was the best drive that you had. Were you calling the plays there?

“Yeah. We were in like a two-minute mode, so I was calling all the plays there to try and get down the field, and all the guys did a good job of getting into windows and making plays after the catch.”

Is something off with the offense, like the timing?

“If you asked me right now, my knee-jerk reaction is giving them credit for making it difficult for us. I’d have to watch it on film to see […]

“This year we decided to make our corn maze design STEELERS! In doing so, we like to choose a relevant organization to work with to offer a fundraising opportunity. We chose the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation as a way to show our appreciation to those men and women in our police and fire depts. who risk their lives to serve and protect us. Our family is thankful for the incredible sacrifices they make each and every day. As a family farm, we know the important role animals play in all of our lives. It is so neat to see how the unique talents of animals can be utilized for such amazing things! We love the fact that we can support the men and women who rely on highly trained animals for support and protection.” — Stacy Milliron

The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation at Work

We have an update on K9 Logen from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office in Maryland!

Remember Logen? He was featured on the website last September, after the Sheriff’s Office sent an email to Ben thanking him for the grant they received to purchase four “K-9 Storm” bullet proof vests, one of which would be used for their new puppy K-9, Logen.

Logen_Leo_Large

Brothers in Paws: Leo and Logen share a “tough guys” moment after a long day of training last year.

And one again, they wanted to share Logen’s progress with Ben’s fans!

“Recently, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit Supervisor Sgt. Joe Stanton and his partner, K9 Logen, along with Montgomery County Police K9 Sergeant Ari Elkin and his Partner K9 Leo, successfully completed K9 detector training. During this training, Logen learned to detect over 20 different combinations of explosive odors and Leo was trained to detect illegal drugs. Upon completion of this training, Logen and Leo officially became part of their respective agency’s K9 unit! Your followers will recognize some of the earlier photos of Logen as he was when he started his training with Sgt. Stanton at just 8 weeks old. He certainly has grown since those early photos. But what most of you don’t know is that Logen and Leo are blood brothers! Born in April of 2012, these two canines are now part of the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Community.

In the photo of the two K-9s together when they were 8-week old puppies, Leo is on the left and Logen is on the right.”

Partners in Crime Fighting: Sgt. Joe Stanton and K-9 Logen ready for their next training assignment.

“Logen and another K9, Harley, are set to begin 16 weeks of K9 Patrol training beginning this month. K9 Harley, a 1-year-old German Shepherd was recently imported from Europe and selected to be Deputy Austin’s first K9 partner.

During these 16 weeks of K9 Patrol School, the K9 teams will be trained in the areas of Obedience, Agility, Tracking, Evidence Search, Suspect Search, and Criminal Apprehension.”

Congratulations to Sgt. Stanton and Sgt. Elkin. Lets all welcome Logen, and Leo into the Sheriff’s Office and the Police Department!

And thank you to Montgomery County Sheriff Darren Popkin, Sgt. Stanton, and especially […]
