Pro Bowl: AFC 59, NFC 41

Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall caught a Pro Bowl-record four touchdown passes, as the AFC downed the NFC, 59-41, Sunday at Aloha Stadium.

Marshall had six catches for 177 yards — the second-most in Pro Bowl history, earning MVP honors for the effort.

Ben completed 6-of-11 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns, including a 74-yarder to Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall. Philip Rivers also had a pair of touchdown passes.

Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees both threw two touchdowns for the NFC.

Panthers rookie Cam Newton, pitted against Dalton for the entire second half, threw two touchdowns but had three interceptions in his Pro Bowl debut. Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald nearly matched Brandon Marshall, reeling in six passes for 111 yards and three scores in defeat.

Quote of the Day:

“You know what? I wanted it. It’s a Pro Bowl. Some guys are playing 100 (percent), some guys are playing 90, some guys aren’t playing at all, but it means a lot to be up in the rafters with some of these guys.

“It says a lot when you’re playing with those guys (Roethlisberger, Rivers & Dalton) playing quarterback. They put it up and I made the play. So hats off to those guys.” — Brandon Marshall, Pro Bowl MVP, during post-game comments.

#7 makes the “Any Era” Top 5

“The guy has played with injuries, the guy’s been battered, hurt, he stays in there. To me he is one of the toughest quarterbacks in my era to play. This guy is my favorite quarterback! He’s like a basketball player playing football…He carries on that Steelers tradition, he’s tough.” — John Randle, voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010.

ESPN asked 20 NFL Hall of Fame players to give them a list of a current player that could have played in any era in the NFL…

Their top 5:

1. Ray Lewis

2. Troy Polamalu

3. Ben Roethlisberger

4. Charles Woodson

5. Brian Urlacher

“I don’t know who to compare him to because I don’t know any quarterback, for his size and strength, that has the mobility, the ability to extend the play, to move out of the pocket and that’s what makes him what he is. Ben is special.” — Mike Ditka, first tight end ever inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, 1988.

Ben and Troy Polamalu weren’t the only Steelers players to make the Any Era Team: Hines Ward came in at #8, and James Harrison was #10!

You can listen to the Hall of Fame panel discuss their player selections here.

You can read what other Hall of Fame players had to say about Ben here.

ESPN’s AFC blogger Jameson Hensley interviewed the man who is #1 on the list, Ray Lewis. Mr. Lewis had this to say about his friendship/kinship with Big Ben:

“Every time we see each other, you’re going to always see — nobody [has] never noticed it — but any time we play each other, I put my hand over my heart and he puts his hand over his heart, and we give each other the nod — warriors going at it — whatever it takes. And that’s the ultimate respect, because when you see guys back in the day, they gave that respect. That’s what the game was always built upon. That’s what makes the [rivalry] so fierce, because back then, when you looked at […]

Thursday: LIVE from Hawaii

Ben sat down with Fran Charles and Marshall Faulk on the NFL Network set after practice this afternoon for an interview during their AFC Pro Bowl Practice coverage. Some highlights from his interview:

On his second Pro Bowl appearance –

“It’s fun. It’s neat to come out here, it’s an awesome honor and a privilege to be out here with some great players, and guys that you compete with, and to have fun with some of the defensive guys that you get into it with during the season (laughs).”

On his mindset when he gets injured but still comes back on to the field –

“It may sound crazy, but sometimes I shouldn’t come back in the game (smiles), but for me, I want to do it for my guys, my teammates, my brothers. If they’re out there battling through injuries I feel like if I can be out there, I want to be out there. The issue is you walk that fine line with going out there injured and hurting your team or helping your team. I never want to cross that line and hurt the team. Obviously, a lot of those things I put in the coach’s hands to make the final decision because that’s the way it should be. But for me, I just want to be out there for my guys to let them know I’m going to battle through anything with them.”

On whether he continued to play the final regular season games to figure out how he was going to play (with the injury) in the post-season –

“Part of it was definitely that…dealing with that big ankle brace that I wear and how and what are my limitations? What are our limitations as an offense?…Part of it was that and part of it was we were playing for a chance to win the North and get that second seed.”

On losing Bruce Arians as his offensive coordinator –

“Well, anyone who knows about the Pittsburgh Steelers, it’s family – from the Rooney’s all the way down to the training staff and to the equipment staff, everybody. So when you lose a family member it’s always tough. And I say that whether it’s a coach, a player, if we lost a trainer…it’s […]

Ben’s Foundation: Kody Snodgrass Memorial Foundation receives grant

Today, Ben announced the ninth grant of the 2011 season from The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation at The Giving Back Fund.

The Foundation will be distributing a grant to the Kody Snodgrass Memorial Foundation in support of the New York State Troopers.

The Kody Snodgrass Memorial Foundation, known as 832 K-9’s Deputy Dogs, will utilize the grant to replace a bloodhound that recently retired early from the New York State Troopers. The new bloodhound will be instituted for search and rescue, criminal tracking, and other scent-specific searches across the Hudson Valley.

From their website:

“The Kody Snodgrass Memorial Foundation, Inc. is dedicated to providing law enforcement with exceptional bloodhounds trained for police work at little or no charge. The Foundation breeds, raises and trains registered bloodhounds, providing the expert training necessary for these dogs to become valuable partners in the law enforcement community.”

You can read about Officer Snodgrass (above with his partner Jimmy in 2001) who is the inspiration for this mission here.

During the 2011-12 NFL season, The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation distributed grants to K-9 units of police and fire departments in the cities and surrounding communities of each regular season away game for the Steelers. This grant marks the first and only grant of the season gifted outside of the NFL markets in honor of the Steelers’ playoff appearance. The Foundation will also distribute several grants to the Pittsburgh area after the Super Bowl. The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation invited police and fire departments across the country to submit proposals detailing their needs.

This marks the fifth season that the foundation has distributed grants to K-9 units. The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation seeks to support K-9 units of police and fire departments throughout the United States with a particular emphasis on support for service dogs in Pittsburgh, PA.
