After meeting Ben at the airport on his way back from completing the White Sands Missile Range 23rd Annual Bataan Memorial Death March in March of 2012, he and Ben became friends. In August of 2013, he was Ben’s guest at Steelers training camp, and made many more friends among Ben’s teammates.


The cover “story”:

Nearly 10 years ago, Iraq war veteran Noah Galloway was lying in a hospital bed at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, D.C., grappling with having lost an arm and a leg due to a roadside explosion. His extensive injuries plunged him into depression. And as recently as five years ago, Galloway says was spending the majority of his days smoking, drinking, and sleeping. Today, the inspiring, super-fit 33-year-old is on the cover of Men’s Health—the first reader in the magazine’s 26-year history to score that honor.

Men’s Health received nearly 1,300 entries in its search for the “Ultimate Men’s Health Guy” to be featured on the cover of the magazine’s November 2014 issue. “There were so many amazing men, narrowing the pool down from 1,300 to our three finalists was torture,” said Men’s Health Editor in Chief Bill Phillips.

Ultimately, one line in Galloway’s video entry set him apart. “He said it was his choice whether to be bitter about what happened to him in Iraq, or to be better—and he chose to be better,” Phillips told Yahoo Health. “That’s a lesson we all can learn from. Every day, whether it’s your job or your relationship or somebody Tweets something nasty at you, it’s very easy to become a negative person. Noah reminds us that when we choose to be better, we can quite literally change our mindsets—and our lives.”



The cover search was an exhaustive eight-month process. “It wasn’t like you just had to send us an email—it was like applying for the college boards,” Phillips said.

Ben finished 30 of 43 for 343 yards and connected with Martavis Bryant for an 80-yard touchdown with 1:16 left in the game, but the Steelers only first-half points came on a 53-yard field goal by Shaun Suisham that cut the deficit to 17-3 as time expired in the second quarter. They attempted an onside kick after that last-minute touchdown, but the Jets’ Eric Decker recovered to seal it for New York.

Today, Ben announced the sixth and seventh grants of the 2014-15 season from the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation at The Giving Back Fund.

The Foundation will be distributing grants to the Washington Township Police Department and the Scotch Plains Police Department near where the Steelers will play the Jets on Sunday, November 9th.

“We are so pleased to be a recipient of the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation, a Foundation that, among other achievements, supports the important work of K-9s in law enforcement. Our K-9 unit provides a unique resource to the community and we are grateful for this funding so our K-9 unit can continue to achieve such positive results. We applaud the work of the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation and appreciate their generosity.” — Deputy Chief Thomas Cicerelle, Washington Township Police Department.

“We are excited for the opportunity to work with the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation at The Giving Back Fund in support of our local K-9 program. Our program has been a tremendous success since its inception and the chance to enhance our efforts at providing safety and security to the people of Scotch Plains. The grant funds will help the Washington Township Police Department meet unexpected medical expenses for their four-year-old German Shepherd, Arek, while the Scotch Plains Police Department will expand their K-9 unit.

During the 2014-15 NFL season, The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation will be distributing grants to K-9 units of police and fire departments in the cities and surrounding communities of each regular season away game for the Steelers. The Foundation will also distribute several grants to the Pittsburgh area and will consider a grant to a non-NFL market city in the United States for each playoff game in which the Steelers compete. The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation invited police and fire departments across the country to submit proposals detailing their needs.

“A win is a win to me, that is all that matters. I don’t care what my stats are as long as we win the football game. I did feel during the game I wasn’t playing my best football. I know the stats are one thing, but I felt like I left some plays out there. It was probably the adrenaline early, so I missed a couple of early throws, but I think we all calmed down, myself especially, as we moved on to the ladder parts of the game. I was a little disappointed. I just thought I could have played better.” — Ben, during Tuesday’s show.

The Steelers are coming off a very convincing 43-23 win over the rival Baltimore Ravens. It’s the Steelers third straight win at home and has them right in the thick of the AFC race.

Roethlisberger followed up his record-setting day over the Indianapolis Colts with another 6 touchdown performance over the Ravens.

Ben told the guys the win over the Ravens felt even more sweet knowing it was at home in front of the Heinz Field crowd on the night when they honored the greatest Steeler ever, when they retired Mean Joe Greene’s No. 75 at halftime.

“To do it on primetime, at night against a division opponent on Joe Greene night, how much more special does it get?” Roethlisberger said. “To see all of those towels waving and the energy that came out of that stadium. To be able to win for the fans and make it just an extra special night was awesome.”

Roethlisberger told the guys he was disappointed only in the fact that since the ceremony was at halftime he didn’t get to see much of it, but did take the opportunity to congratulate Greene and ask him to sign his program that featured the legendary Steeler on the cover.

The Steelers offensive outburst over the past three games (scoring 124 points) may have silenced those fans and members of the media who were calling for offensive coordinator Todd Haley to be fired.
