Ben to open “Seven” restaurant near Heinz Field

From Joyce Hanz, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

picmonkey_image (3)Ben Roethlisberger is opening a new restaurant in Pittsburgh, steps away from Heinz Field and PNC Park on the North Shore.

The Steelers quarterback and longtime business partner and friend Scott Kier will open North Shore Seven, scheduled for an April 2019 debut — just in time for the Pirates home opener.

“The guys on the team always refer to him as ‘Seven,’ not Ben, so we wanted to call it Seven,” said Kier, explaining the eatery name choice.

The menu will offer made-from-scratch entrees, salads, appetizers, sandwiches and pour more than 50 taps, including craft beers. Designed for about 250 patrons, diners will choose from indoor/outdoor dining — including two bars and two patios. Kier said they are still in the design phase with an emphasis on maximizing the large space.

Kier, a Greensburg native now living in Charleston, S.C., described the space as “industrial chic.”

“It’s safe to say there won’t be a bad seat in the house to view sports. It’s on the first floor, and we have city views, and actually the best river views of the city from the North Shore — clear and unobstructed. It was a long hard climb to get here. They just don’t hand out spaces like this to just anyone, even if your name is Ben Roethlisberger.” — Scott Kier.

North Shore Seven is the fourth establishment for the business partners, and the first to open in Pittsburgh. The pair operate three additional restaurants together in the south — King Street Grille locations in Myrtle Beach and Kiawah Island in South Carolina, and the Savannah Taphouse in Savannah, Ga.

“Food is very important to both Ben and I,” Kier said. “From the beginning, we knew that great food was the key to being unique and having longevity. Everything we do is made from scratch. We wanted to do different food than typical sports bar (food).”

Signature dishes such as Sweet Tea Fried Chicken marinated 36 hours in sweet tea, Create-Your-Own-Chopped Salads (think homemade salad dressings on custom salads), custom Angus burgers and Asiago Crusted Chicken separate their restaurants from the run-of-the-mill sports bar offerings.

Past King Street Grille culinary awards include “Best Sports Bar” for ten years running by Charleston City Paper and “Best Salads” by WMBF in Myrtle Beach.

“Steeler Nation is alive and well in Charleston, SC. Loyal fans held their 7th Annual Steelers Cruise in the Charleston Harbor last Saturday. Proceeds from this event are given to our favorite local charity – Carolina Children’s Charity. The Charity was created by local volunteers committed to meeting the needs of local children with birth defects. Carolina Children’s has no state of federal affiliation and relies solely on the generosity of the community. What a great way to kick of another successful football season! Ben: ‘I am excited to get out there’

From Teresa Varley at Steelers.com:

082118Saturday afternoon’s preseason game against the Tennessee Titans will be the final tune up for the regular season for many of the starters, and Ben Roethlisberger doesn’t know how long he will be out there, but he is looking forward to playing for the first time this preseason.

“I am not really sure. I haven’t spoken to Coach (Mike Tomlin) on it,” said Roethlisberger of how many series he thinks he will play. “I am excited to get out there. I am sure there will be some jitters and rust. It will be good to get out there with the guys.

“Just to get out there. Usually the amount of plays determines how we do series wise, are you going three-and-out, are you sustaining drives. Things like that. It’s the first time we all will be together on the field at the same time, so it would be nice to put together a couple of drives and find a way to finish them off and stay healthy.”

Those jitters, that excitement is something that comes naturally for all players the first time they hit the field each season, whether you are a rookie or a 15-year veteran like Roethlisberger.

“It’s live action. We have been at practice and everything gets a little faster, a little quicker. I hope I don’t get hit, but it’s always good to knock that rust off too at some point.”

Roethlisberger took a hit in training camp that had everyone holding their breath for a few minutes. In the team’s final practice in Latrobe, Marcus Gilbert’s arm hit Roethlisberger’s helmet, and Roethlisberger went to the ground. He went into concussion protocol, but he never had a concussion.

“You don’t expect to get hit, and then to get hit from the blind side,” said Roethlisberger. “Gil just happened to be pushing the guy around and caught me just right. It knocked the wind out of me a little bit too.”

Roethlisberger left the field, and quickly went through testing, but it didn’t take long to know he was okay.

“(It was) pretty quick,” said Roethlisberger. “I think the scary thing is the verbiage, concussion protocol. I think what a lot of people don’t realize, players included, that doesn’t mean you have a concussion. You go into a protocol system […]

Well, we ARE in the “Dog” days of summer after all…

Plus any excuse is a good excuse to re-post this gem!

Not so long ago Benjamin Jr. belted out a rousing rendition of the Months of the Year song, including favorites “Dog” & “Tober”:

Seriously, with a milk mustache, an “I do my own stunts” t-shirt on, and a baby sister who is clearly his biggest fan – it just doesn’t get any better than this!

Enjoy the rest of your summer, Steeler Nation!

Pouncey: Ben makes football fun

From Teresa Varley, Steelers.com:

PounceyThere is no doubt the offensive line loves Ben Roethlisberger, and when he went down on the last day of training camp everyone was holding their breath. But they are breathing a sigh of relief now.

“Ben makes football easy,” said Pouncey. “He is a heck of a quarterback. He is a Hall of Fame first ballot guy. Whenever you have a quarterback like that, football is fun and easy.

“That was really good (that he is okay), especially your franchise QB. To get hit unexpectedly and I think he bounced back pretty quickly, that was good.”
