Ben’s foot injury is not expected to keep him out of Pittsburgh’s game against the Titans this Sunday. An MRI on Monday revealed that injury was a sprained foot, and not a fracture.

“You know me, if I can be out there, I’m going to be out there. That’s for next week too.” — Ben, after last Sunday’s game.

From Coach Tomlin today during his press conference:

“Ben had his foot x-rayed, MRI, thankfully nothing is broken,” said Tomlin. “It is a sprain. It may limit him at the early portions of the week. We anticipate him being able to participate in this football game.”

When pressed for more details, Coach Tomlin added that the team will also get backup Charlie Batch ready if needed.

As for Tennessee….

The Titans are expecting Ben to play, boot or no boot.

“We all know what he’s accomplished and what a great player he’s been in this league and how he’s played with injuries,” said coach Mike Munchak. “We’re assuming he’s going to be healthy and ready to go.”


As for Ben playing hurt….

Wide receiver Mike Wallace didn’t notice a difference in Roethlisberger’s presence other than the noticeable limp with which he walked to the line of scrimmage.

“He was his usual self — still trying to make plays, still trying to get guys going,” Wallace said. “But we just didn’t get it done.”

To 16-year old Zach Kern! According to his father Dean, Zach loves watching the Steeler’s play (with dad of course), and always has his Terrible Towel in hand to wave during the games.

Zack has surgery tomorrow morning (Wednesday) at 7:15am at St. Francis Children’s Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Post-Game Update:

Ben had X-ray taken of his left foot after the game and is expected to have an MRI. He said the injury occurred on the second-to-last series when he was tackled from behind. He remained in the game but had trouble walking afterward in the locker room.

Ben told the media that it’s too early to tell if he will be able to play next Sunday when the Tennessee Titans come to Heinz Field.

“I don’t know. I’m still worrying about this game. It’s still too fresh in my mind to worry about next week yet.”

Ben said the loss boiled down to “just making plays, plays I didn’t make, plays I could have made. We had a group of linemen, offensive guys who we were plugging around all over the place. I gotta step up and make plays, and I didn’t do it today.”

But he isn’t pushing the panic button.

“We’ve been down this road enough times that we know it’s about when you get hot. If we can pull together, offense, defense, special teams, and get hot at the right time that’s all that matters.”

He had plenty of company in the injury department today – Aaron Smith, Rashard Mendenhall, Jason Worilds, and James Harrison were also sidelined in the loss.

Roethlisberger limped into the locker room about 20 minutes after the game with his arms draped around a pair of Steelers employees and an ace bandage and a bag of ice wrapped around his injured foot. He sat alone at his chair with his head down and looked to be gazing at his foot for several minutes before putting on the walking boot to limp to the showers.

The Steelers were without two regular starters on the offensive line Sunday. Roethlisberger has now been sacked 14 times this season and hurried 22 other times.

Still, he didn’t blame Sunday’s problems on his line.

Ben announced the third grant of the 2011 season from The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation at The Giving Back Fund this evening.

The foundation will be distributing a grant to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, in Houston, TX, where the Steelers will play the Texans on Sunday, October 2.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office will use the grant to increase the size of their existing K-9 corps by purchasing a trainable, dual-purpose canine that will then be passed along to their own certified staff for narcotics detection and patrol-related training. This addition will bring their unit total up to 16 certified dogs.

“Increasing the number of K-9s that can detect drugs, bombs and hidden humans has been important in my effort to keep our community as crime-free as possible,” Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia, a Houston native who has rooted for the Texans and Oilers to triumph over the Steelers for years.

“Maybe it helps that we both wear Black and Gold!” Garcia added, referring to the Steelers and Sheriff’s Office uniform colors.

A tweet from the Houston based “K9’s4cops” organization this week not only thanked Ben for the grant but told their followers that “our next crime fighting K9 ‘Big Ben’ will proudly wear the #7 on his collar!!”

The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation is distributing grants to police and fire departments in Pittsburgh and in the cities and surrounding communities of each regular season away game for the Steelers in the 2011 season. Last summer, Ben invited police and fire departments in the local areas of those nine cities to submit proposals detailing their needs.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette‘s Ron Cook filled in on 93-7 The Fan this morning and had the opportunity to interview HOF quarterback Joe Namath.

Among the topics discussed were the New York Jets and his concerns about their offensive line, his Super Bowl III win, and his opinion on the top tier quarterbacks in the league right now:

“There are several guys that are terrific man, including Ben Roethlisberger.  It is a team game and if you don’t have the team you are not going to perform as well as you probably could…

“You guys all know the top 5, 6, 7 quarterbacks and they have good teams to work with – Brady, Manning, Rogers, Rivers, Brees, Roethlisberger. That is the cream of the crop right there.”

“The Houston media – I just got done talking to them and they asked me how I have confidence in guys we ‘pull off the street’. I was trying to figure out who we pulled off the street. Those are guys I’ve known for a long time and have been here for a long time. I have all of the confidence in the world in those guys that they will step up for whoever they need to step up for. To me that’s what’s so impressive. Last week Trai played right tackle, he played left tackle, he probably played guard at some point. Those guys can do it and it’s awesome to watch.”

Ben made his first NFL start!

On September 26, 2004, Ben and the Steelers played the Miami Dolphins in Miami during Hurricane Jeanne, which was labeled the “deadliest hurricane of the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season” as well as the 13th costliest hurricane in U.S. history.

Officials decided on the Saturday before the game to push the starting time back 7-1/2 hours to avoid the hurricane, but the game still caught the outer bands of the storm.

The Steelers won 13-3.

“It wasn’t pretty at times,” said Ben. “But we got the win.”

He finished 12-of-22 for 163 yards and one score.

The driving rain left standing water on the field, which made footing especially treacherous. The start of the second half was delayed so the grounds crew could apply additional bags of dirt.

“That was the worst weather I ever played in,” Hines Ward said.
