Thanksgiving Night: Steelers 28, Colts 7

“When you’re in the huddle with him, you know you’re going to have a chance to make some big plays.” — Antonio Brown on his quarterback.

Late Night Re-cap:

112516Ben passed for 221 yards and three touchdowns – each to Antonio Brown – giving the Steelers a 28-7 victory on a Thanksgiving night against the Colts, whose starting quarterback Andrew Luck was out with a concussion.

Ben completed 14 of 20 passes, and Le’Veon Bell rushed 23 times for 120 yards and a touchdown as the Steelers won for the second time in five days on the road after winning Sunday at Cleveland.

The offense scored touchdowns on each of its first three drives. Le’Veon Bell’s 5-yard touchdown run capped a seven-play, 52-yard drive the first time they had the ball making it 7-0. Ben made it 14-0 with 1:06 to go in the opening quarter on a 25-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Brown, capping a seven-play, 58-yard drive.

With the help of a 35-yard pass on a fake punt by Pat McAfee, the Colts pulled to within 14-7 with 13:02 left in the second quarter on Tolzien’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Donte Moncrief.

Ben countered with a 33-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Brown with 9:00 to go in the half, increasing the lead to 21-7.

And it wasn’t just the offense….

From Bob Labriola, Steelers.com:

The Steelers ended up winning this game, 28-7, but the way it unfolded could’ve been a lot different if not for the efforts of Mike Mitchell. On two different occasions, Mitchell made plays to prevent the Colts from scoring from the Steelers’ 1-yard line, and then his fourth quarter interception ended another Indianapolis possession and was the catalyst for the touchdown that iced the outcome…

Mitchell finished with seven tackles, an interception, and two passes defensed, and he is the Steelers Digest Player of the Week.

Ben: ‘We are a different football team’

Ben’s “chat” with the media took place today & Teresa Varley has the latest:

112216Ben Roethlisberger isn’t looking at games in the past, he is just looking ahead.

While a Thanksgiving night game might be the perfect way for Steelers Nation to wind down a great day spent with family and friends, for the players it’s the culmination of what is a challenging and short week.

The Steelers head to Indianapolis to take on the Colts Thursday night, with only two and a half days of preparation before they board a plane.

And that means squeezing a lot of work into a short window, with a lot on their plates to get ready.

“(We are doing) everything we can, especially both of them being on the road,” said Ben Roethlisberger as far as the preparation for Thursday night. “It can be a challenge. Incorporating a lot of game planning into basically one, two days. It can be very tricky.”

The Steelers will face an opponent they have seen over the last few years, defeating the Colts 45-10 at Heinz Field in 2015, and 51-34 in 2014, also at home. But those games don’t play at all into this year’s preparation.

“Those are in the years past,” said Roethlisberger. “This is a different football team. We are a different football team. We are going to their place. Hostile environment, short week. There are a lot of challenges involved this week.”

The Colts defense is ranked 32nd overall in the NFL against the pass, 30th in overall defense, but with new defensive coordinator Ted Monachino, who spent the last six years as a linebackers coach for the Ravens, Roethlisberger expects to see some familiar looks.

“It’s a lot of Baltimore-esque stuff,” said Roethlisberger. “Their defensive coordinator is new and from Baltimore. We are seeing a lot of Baltimore looks.”

The Ben Roethlisberger Show

From Ben’s radio show this morning on 93.7 The Fan:

112116_1The Steelers ended their four-game losing streak with a 24-9 win over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. At times, it didn’t look pretty and some feel that they played down to the Browns.

“People can say what they want, but we won the game and that is all that matters,” Roethlisberger said. “We’ve heard it this year and we’ve heard in years’ past how we play down to the level of competition, or we don’t win the games we’re supposed to win. Well, we won that game, one I thought we were supposed to win, an AFC North game at their place in hostile weather and environment. I don’t think people will be talking about it in that sense, but we were happy we got the win and that is what really matters.”

Roethlisberger did admit that they could have been better in the red zone early. However, some of the credit has to be given to what the Browns were able to do.

“We have been this year one of the top offenses in the red zone, so it’s not like we have red zone issues. So, I will look at that game thinking they (Browns) must have done some really good things in the red zone,” Roethlisberger said. “Yeah, we will kick ourselves for not scoring down there because we felt we could have put that game away a lot sooner.”

It was a much-needed win that ended a four-game skid, but there is not much time to enjoy this one because they have to get ready to play the Indianapolis Colts on Thanksgiving.

112116The win tied Roethlisberger with Derek Anderson in most wins by any quarterback in Cleveland since the franchise returned to the NFL in 1999.

“I can’t wait to be able to break that record,” Roethlisberger said.

Roethlisberger admits that the schedule makers did them no favors in having to play back-to-back road games in a span of five days, but they can’t make excuses.

“They (Colts) have a home-and-home,” Roethlisberger added. “But, we’re not going to complain. If we want to be a playoff caliber team and be able to go on the road in the playoffs, we have to be able to […]
